Your AC quits in the middle of July. The technician gives you a repair price. And now you're standing in a hot house trying to decide whether to spend the money or put it toward a new system instead.
There's no single right answer, but there are a few things that make the decision much clearer.
Start with the age of the system
Most residential systems in El Paso last somewhere between twelve and eighteen years. Ours work harder than systems almost anywhere else in the country — a unit here might run most of the day for four straight months, in heat that pushes design limits and dust that coats a condenser coil in weeks.
If your system is under ten years old, repair is almost always the better money. Past fifteen, the math starts to shift, because you're paying to fix one component in a machine where everything else is the same age.
The One-Third Rule
A useful rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than about a third of what a new system would, replacement usually wins. Not always — but it's the point where the question deserves real thought instead of a reflex.
The reason is simple. A $400 repair on a fifteen-year-old system buys you an unknown amount of time. It might be five years. It might be until August. Nobody can promise you which.
If your system still runs R-22, the decision is mostly made
R-22 refrigerant has not been produced or imported in the United States since 2020. What's left is reclaimed and recycled refrigerant, and the price reflects that.
If you have a leak in an R-22 system, you're paying a premium for refrigerant that goes into a system that's already at the end of its service life. At that point, most homeowners are better off putting the money toward equipment that uses current R-410A or R-454B refrigerant.
What tips it toward REPAIR:
- ✔ The system is under ten years old
- ✔ Single failed component (capacitor, contactor, fan motor)
- ✔ System is in good shape and has been maintained
- ✔ You plan to move in the next couple of years
What tips it toward REPLACEMENT:
- ✖ Age over fifteen years
- ✖ Major compressor failure
- ✖ Repeated repairs in the same season
- ✖ Rising electric bills with no explanation
- ✖ System was never sized correctly initially
That last point matters more than most people realize. An undersized system in El Paso never gets ahead of the heat — it runs constantly, wears out early, and never quite cools the house. If that's been your experience for years, replacement isn't just a repair decision. It's a chance to fix the original installation flaw.
