What's actually involved in a conversion
A conversion is more than swapping one box for another. Done properly, it usually includes:
- 1. Outdoor Condenser & Indoor Coil / Air Handler This is the heart of it — the refrigerated system itself, sized specifically for your house layout and heat gain.
- 2. Complete Ductwork Evaluation & Sizing Swamp cooler ducts were designed to move a large volume of air at low pressure. Refrigerated air moves differently. Ducts often need resizing, sealing, or replacement — if they leak into a 150°F attic, you are paying to cool your roof.
- 3. Electrical Panel Upgrades Refrigerated systems draw considerably more power than swamp coolers. Many older El Paso homes require a dedicated circuit or panel upgrade.
- 4. Roof Removal & Sealing The old cooler comes off and the roof opening gets closed and weather-sealed properly to prevent leaks during severe monsoon downpours.
- 5. Smart Thermostat Installation Usually a great moment to transition to a programmable or smart thermostat since rewiring is happening anyway.
